What is the Read Together program? Children need to hear stories read aloud for early literacy development. In our Read Together Program, Beginning with Books matches children with trained adult volunteers who read to them each week in one of 18 local library sites.

How does it work? Volunteers commit to read one-on-one with a child for one hour. All of our volunteers receive an orientation that includes the importance of reading aloud, tips on how to select books, handle distractions, conduct other literacy-related activities, and how to encourage family reading and library use. All volunteers must have or apply for state clearances of criminal and child abuse records. Beginning with Books will provide the required forms and, if necessary, cover the cost. Volunteers read with children in local libraries after- school and in the early evenings on weeknights and on Saturday morning. Library reading sessions take place at one of 18 branches of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

What are the benefits? Studies show that the best way to prepare children to learn to read is by reading aloud. Volunteers are able to share their love of books with a child and know that they have contributed to the mission of Beginning with Books by helping to increase the numbers of children who become capable and enthusiastic lifelong readers. Children receive the benefit of one-on-one attention, enriched conversation about books and other experiences, and activities that build the skills and understanding of literacy, as well as the joys and benefits.
