What is the Early Literacy Outreach program? The Early Literacy Outreach program is an intense early literacy training and mentoring experience for early educators and caregivers who want to promote literacy development for children. Participants learn research-based approaches that allow them to provide children with the experiences and environments that prepare them for success in school.

How does it work? The training includes workshop sessions and a mentoring program that supports implementation of key concepts and strategies. Classroom book collections are provided to participants for enrolling in this training and mentoring program. The curriculum focuses on the literacy development of children from birth to five.

One Saturday per month for nine months Beginning with Books trainers and staff conduct workshop sessions to provide information about early literacy to caregivers enrolled in this program. Additionally, Beginning with Books Outreach Specialists follow-up with a mentoring visit and an observation to assist caregivers as they apply the knowledge gained during the workshop sessions.

What are the benefits? Beginning with Books training is designed to help educators learn about key concepts in early literacy development, including reading aloud to children; creating a print rich setting; recognizing early writing and reading milestones; phonemic awareness; and many other practices necessary to help children develop reading and learning skills for later success in school. We need to help childcare providers apply these concepts in their own settings, and share their experiences with others who are working in the field including co-workers. The curriculum is based on current research on the development of literacy in young children and on an active learning approach to adult education. Beginning with Books training offers early childhood professionals an opportunity to learn and practice new ideas in a supportive atmosphere and reflect on the effectiveness of their implementation. Additionally, parents and staff have the opportunity to participate in Raising Readers Parent Clubs and children are invited to attend the Read Together program.
