Mission
The mission of Beginning with Books is to increase meaningfully the numbers of children who become capable and enthusiastic lifelong readers. This is accomplished through research-based programs respectfully offering the information, materials, skill development, and encouragement that enable parents and other adults to promote the literacy development of the children in their care. Beginning with Books programs operate in partnership with other organizations serving low-income families. Beginning with Books also offers training and materials that equip others to adapt or replicate its programs.
Core values
Prevention is the key to breaking the generational cycle of literacy problems.
The first five years of life are crucial to fostering the skills and habits of literacy, provided this is undertaken in developmentally appropriate ways.
Most parents and caregivers are eager to support the literacy development of their children and are able to do so when provided with suitable guidance and materials.
The opportunity to own and experience new, high-quality children's books, that are both culturally and developmentally appropriate, fosters in both young children and the adults who care for them mutually enjoyable literacy experiences and a love of books.
