Early Literacy Outreach

Our Early Literacy Outreach (ELO) program brings you the heart and essence of all of Beginning with Books’ programs. It offers professional development and mentoring for those who provide early education and child care to Pittsburgh’s low-income families. Through this premier program, you will have the opportunity to learn best practices in early literacy with accredited trainers while receiving Act 48 or DPW credit hours.

How can I participate?

  • Your site must be state licensed.
  • At least half of the children in care must be eligible for free or reduced lunches according to the federal guidelines.
  • Your site must be located within a 15 mile radius of our main office at 5920 Kirkwood Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
  • You must be willing to commit to a two year term of participation (one Saturday per month during year one and three Saturdays a year in year two).

What are the benefits?

  • You will receive a collection of high quality books selected for their appeal to young children.
  • Parents will have a chance to learn more about their child’s early literacy development through our Raising Reader Parent Clubs.
  • Your families receive a Gift Book Packet.
  • The Storymobile visits your site at least once a month. Children borrow books and enjoy storytime.
  • You will receive mentoring visits from our Outreach Specialists who will help you implement ideas and track progress.
