Your Donation Makes a Difference

Did you know that?

  • you can make the difference between a child succeeding in school or being a high school drop-out
  • some parents don’t read to their kids because they can’t afford to buy books
  • you can help low-income parents make their homes places where kids love reading books

Knowing this, would you lend your support?

For 18 years, Beginning with Books has done all this and more with the generous support of people just like you. Working in partnership with organizations that serve low-income families throughout greater Pittsburgh, Beginning with Books helps thousands of children become successful learners and lifelong readers with innovative and effective early literacy programs.

  • The Gift Book program gives families a packet of three brand-new books (plus a coupon for a fourth book, redeemable at a local library) and tips on reading aloud to children, and more. Last year, nearly 12,000 book packets were distributed—that’s 48,000 books! Your gift of $100 pays for five Gift Book packets.

  • Read Together trains and organizes volunteers to read to children at local libraries, and provides book packets to program families. Last year, 214 volunteers gave over 10,000 hours of story time reading to children ages 3 to 7. Your gift of $500 underwrites the training of 20 volunteers to read to children.

  • Storymobiles—mini-libraries on wheels—visit early childhood centers and public housing communities with story times and quality children’s books and more. The staff of our two mobile libraries loaned over 9,100 books to children, parents, and teachers at 58 daycare centers and 18 public housing projects. Your gift of $1000 puts 200 books into the hands of kids through this program.

Beginning with Books has many other programs and events that support its mission of increasing ?the numbers of children who become capable and enthusiastic lifelong readers.?

You can designate your contribution for a specific program or make a gift in honor or memory of someone special—perhaps the person who taught you how to read. Call 412-361-8560 or contact Marti Beard, Director of Development, to learn what else you can do.

Your gift to Beginning with Books makes a difference ... one book at a time ... one child at a time.
