Read to children at Child Care Centers with the Team Volunteer Program:
The Team Volunteer Program provides one-on-one read-aloud time with at-risk children to reduce the gap in reading and school success between affluent children and those from low-income families.
For infants, toddlers, and preschool children who do not come from a home rich in books and language, studies show that a daily group story time at the child care site, though desirable, is not sufficient to achieve school readiness by age 5 or 6. These children need one-on-one or small group reading-aloud, enriched conversation about books and other experiences, and activities that build the skills and understanding of literacy, as well as the joys and benefits. The sad fact is that few of the early care and education (?day care?) sites in low-income neighborhoods have the staffing to provide these essentials. Volunteers can make a huge difference for those children judged at-risk for reading failure.
How You Can Help
Beginning with Books will match volunteers from your company with an early education and care center in need of ongoing volunteers to provide essential literacy experiences for children. We currently work with centers in Homewood, East Liberty, Northside, Southisde, Hill District, and Wilkinsburg.
Team members will commit to send volunteers on a weekly basis for at least one hour.
The volunteer team would be coordinated with the help of a company team leader.
Beginning with Books Staff will be available for training and literacy support.
