Nancy Coffelt offers readers an ode to the glory of language with her latest book. Familiar animals make simple statements about themselves. The turtle is slow. The sloth is slower. The snail is slowest. These simple statements are just the beginning of the fun. The turtle isn’t just slow, he is “plodding.” The sloth is “poky.” The snail is “lethargic.”

 

Using bold acrylics, Coffelt keeps the illustration and design as simple as her introductory statements. Each animal is rendered on a vibrant background with thick, black outlines. Single pages alternate with double-page spreads.

 

Anyone who loves words will have fun reading this book aloud. Even more fun will be had when young listeners begin using new words to describe their hunger or speed.
